I used to see tons of them around as a kid, but the last one I saw that wasn't in a junkyard was probably the one my sister's boyfriend bought a few years ago, which burned oil and had a direct-wired alternator, with no fuse: 38936.

That car basically rolled over and died after a few months, but that wasn't a big deal for a car that I think he only paid $400 for. I think he ended up selling it for $50 to some guy from Alabama.

Y'know, honestly, the areas I grew up in were vastly mostly domestic cars, with only a handful of imports (mainly in my own family, with my father and his father both having Mercedes 220Ds).

The most "off-beat" cars I could remember outside of my family were two kids whose parents had a late '70s Accord coupe and a Saab 900 convertible.

Perhaps that's why I have been so fascinated with Japanese and European cars from the '70s, as they're like a different universe for me.
