Description:
The East German Wartburg 353, sometimes also called the Knight. While the Trabant is certainly better known, the Wartburg with it's dreadful styling, dreadful communist ergonomics and dreadful 3 cylinder 2-stroke sub 1 liter engine, lasted just about as long in production from the late 50's until 1986. Somehow, defying sanity, some 20,000 units were sold in Western countries across that time.

Even the name "wartburg" was totally unappetizing, though it wasn't intentional, Wartburg Castle in Germany gave the marque it's name

Towards the end the Wartburgs received VW engines.

#2, Ah, that makes much more sense. I can't imagine that, even in the less "green" era of the 60's that anyone would put up with a car that smoked NORMALLY in traffic....
