Description:
The East German Wartburg 353, sometimes also called the Knight. While the Trabant is certainly better known, the Wartburg with it's dreadful styling, dreadful communist ergonomics and dreadful 3 cylinder 2-stroke sub 1 liter engine, lasted just about as long in production from the late 50's until 1986. Somehow, defying sanity, some 20,000 units were sold in Western countries across that time. |

Even the name "wartburg" was totally unappetizing, though it wasn't intentional, Wartburg Castle in Germany gave the marque it's name |

Towards the end the Wartburgs received VW engines.

#2, Ah, that makes much more sense. I can't imagine that, even in the less "green" era of the 60's that anyone would put up with a car that smoked NORMALLY in traffic.... |
