Aside from Brabus for Mercedes an Alpina for BMW, third-party tuners really aren't as prominent as they once were.

Perhaps it's because OEM cars have become so complicated and their bodies so precisely engineered, that it's extremely difficult for a tuner to actually improve a car, in a meaningful way, in a manner that makes financial sense?

Heck, high-end factory cars are so ungodly fast now, what's the point of an independent tuner?

#5, ABT and Novitec would like a word. Though, at this point, they're almost like their own manufacturer now.

#5, I think part of it is that cars have just gotten too damn expensive relative to income. There's no room to spend more for improvement when you're already spending $100,000+ on a typical luxury 4 door.

#7, $70k for a non-luxury-brand five seat SUV in top-trim as well.

...and you can't even "order" a car with the trim/color/options you want. You're stuck with whatever the dealership gets off the boat/truck.

... it's why I've cancelled my efforts to trade-in the CX-3... what's the point if I'll be paying through the nose, and won't be able to even get exactly what I want?

I'll give it two more years, when the CX-3 is a decade old... maybe then I'll have better options.
