1940 American Bantam military vehicle prototype. The first Jeep.

As with the BMW Dixi, this was (loosely) based on the Austin 7.

#1, Well, I believe only this one prototype was loosely based on the 7. By the time the Jeep entered production (at the hands of Willys and Ford, with American Bantam left to die... grrr...) it was on its own proprietary chassis, IIRC.

This AB prototype was thrown together in an amazingly short amount of time. What that tiny little company in Butler, Pennsylvania accomplished with designing this vehicle is truly amazing. ...and really makes it a fucking tragedy that the company folded since they were left out of the government contract to actually PRODUCE the Jeeps...
