I've read somewhere that an Austrian division of VW rallied a beetle with Porsche drivetrain. Can't verify it though.

I would think a Beetle would make a pretty good rally car.

#3, Perhaps. It's light, the RR setup allows to floor the gas early in a corner but then again I imagine it does understeer at corner entry and the heavy rear makes it quite unforgiving if the driver makes a mistake.
I considered a Beetle for amateur rallies but the engines are weak, suspension design awkward and I'm not an uber-mechanic to turn an old Beetle into a zippy, reliable and good handling car.

Doesn't take an uber-mechanic, really....you can practically take apart and reassemble one with a set of screw drivers and a rubber-tipped mallet.
You can also get decent power out of those flat fours if you build 'em right. Over 200 reliable horsepower isn't uncommon.

#5, You got me interested. Thing is, they are not cheap anymore, parts are not easy to get anymore and don't even get me started on torsion bar suspensions. It's IMPOSSIBLE to stiffen them up without simply replacing the bar and lowering is a bitch too (seems simple but good luck ending up with both sides on the same height and keeping them from sagging on hard bumps).

I don't know about across that big ole' pond, but they're still cheap here. I'm literally within a few hundred feet of a junkyard almost exclusively full of them....at least 75 of them or so. I used to mess around at the garage there (I know the owner) and he restores the old VWs in his off-time. I did plenty of work with them, and it seems like there isn't a single part on them that isn't available in reproduction.

#7, I'd have to import parts from Germany I think. Waaay out of my price range. For the same cash it would take to build a decent amateur rally 1600cc Beetle I could build a decked out (rollcage, Spax suspension, LSD, Ferodo brakes etc.) turbo 1400cc Renault 5 out of my junker.

#8, I don't know about the exchange rate and all, but it could be cheaper to import them from the U.S....There are a bunch of companies here that make the reproduction parts for them.

#9, I'll think about it when I'll:
a) get a stable and well paid job (being a track marshal does not qualify as one)
b) make a national rally license (so I can relax and drive purely for fun as that would put me in the "guest" class).
