Because of a gap in terms of the 914 being discontinued, and the 924 being a year off, Porsche reintroduced the Porsche 912 as the "cheap Porsche" for just one year, powered by the 2.0L VW engine that had powered the most recent versions of the 914. I don't think it was all that successful...
