#1, It's the combination of height of the sides and the relatively short track and wheelbase. It has tall roof to boot.

Y'know... a few styling tweaks here and there, and this design could have stayed relatively "relevant" up through the late '70s... it's kinda got that timeless look like the Jeep Wagoneer and Checker Marathon.

#3, I can really picture it in single-tone, with the side trim removed, black plastic molding added to the lower side, large 3-piece crash bumpers with black plastic inserts, a smaller steering wheel, and a silver-painted plastic "eggcrate" style grille. Maybe also some 10-spoke "turbine" style alloy wheels, with Sears Adventurer white-letter tires.
