Aye. Not counting the pickups, of which there are two or three around here, I think it's been about 8 years since I've seen a Rabbit....a dark red diesel 4 door, that was abandoned in my half brother's yard in Birmingham.

I wonder... how was the build quality of the Westmoreland VWs, compared to German-built ones, and even Brazilian-built ones?

#6, Compared to the German ones, quality control was on par, but US-built cars prior to one particular year (1983 or thereabouts) featured cheaper interior materials and soft suspensions.

Brazilian VWs I suspect are much of the same. My parents loved their '89 Fox, but the interior plastic was incredibly thin and brittle.

On older models: The cost of Type II busses continues to climb, quite a few Brazilian models have made their way into the US market, and they're notorious for having thinner sheetmetal. They're less sought-after, and less knowledgeable people get rooked on them.
