IIRC, both Ford and the Rootes Group were offered the rights to the Volkswagen by the West German government "free of charge" shortly after the war, along with the remnants of the bombed-out factories/tooling, and all they had to do in exchange was invest in rebuilding the factory and provide capital to restart production.

Both firms determined the car to be worthless and that it'd be a futile investment.

#3, To be fair, at the time it would've been. Compact cars weren't really a viable market segment in the US until the 1958 recession. Even the Beetle only sold in small numbers prior to then.

The only truly successful compacts in the US prior to then were the Nash Rambler and Metropolitan, likely due to the large existing dealer network (and that both cars inexplicably had a "sporty" image for the time).

#4, One would think Ford might be interested for their European operations, and The Rootes Group should have kept post-war Britain's needs for a cheap cars in mind.
