Ever since playing DiRT 2 and watching From Dust to Glory I've been in awe of American off road racing trucks and buggies.
I understand why they usually have automatic transmissions, but I still don't get the total absence of either glass or plastic windows.

Sometimes they go through damp environments and event dust can collect on any plastic. That means that you need a way to wash it. Washing it adds weight. Weight it bad.

They have plastic on their helmet visors they rip off when they become too dirty. Glare would be a very bad thing.

#2, Wouldn't the weight of the washers and wipers offset having 5 inches of dirt in the vehicle? I know they wear pressurised helmets but I'm guessing things like gauges, instruments and pace notes are better off clean. Another reason I found was stones being kicked up into the glass, but I guess this applies mostly to circuit racing (plus it's probably better for the stones to hit the glass/plastic than your visor).

#3, Conventional glass is too heavy

Plexiglass scratches and induces glare

Thus, cheapest solution, run with neither and give the driver a helmet :p

And Dirt2 did indeed rock.

#3, You're assuming you have a closed cockpit.

They're cages with a couple skid plates.

They're practically buggies with fake fiberglass truck bodies, aren't they?

#6, Basically yes (space frame) but I think ('think' being the key word) a 'proper' buggy is MR: then again there are FR and AWD buggies too.

They finished 2nd in class and 22nd overall.
Speaking of Dakar, I feel bad for Gordon but it's hilarious that he still did not learn not to talk shit before the race.
