Description:
56' Mercury Montclair. As the penultimate Mercury of that model year (and 55' as well) it got the decadent two-tone paint, optional sunroof, and, the most luxurious option of all: FACTORY SEAT BELTS!

In 60 years, we've gone from cars that don't even have seatbelts to cars that deploy so many airbags when bumped that a curb-strike can total a car.

Rule of thumb - $3,000 per blown bag when you figure in the costs to remove the old and install a new one, since they can't re-packed.

"Passenger safety" has really become an excuse to grub more money, and one that few people question at that.

#4, I cringe when I see the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests that slam a compact against a much larger vehicle, claming the results show that even MORE safety equipment needs to be installed...

Yeah? How about I slam a 38-airbag Volvo wagon into a 747? How will the Volvo fare?

[edit]... and the new "small overlap" offset crash tests? They realized that cars are so safe, that they don't have much to do... so they find the absolute weakest part of a car's structure, and specifically design a test to fail it.
