I can imagine this happening if British Leyland was like "I say, we should peddle the ADO71 Austin Princess to the Yanks", and it actually caught on well enough in North America that Ford wanted to compete with it, but their response went into production at the same time Princess production ended and people had wised up.

I mean really, who would buy a Lincoln with a rear hatch anyway? :P
