I personally think Mercedes is needlessly throwing away years of model name recognition with this new, ludicrously convoluted branding scheme...

This is what used to be the ML, right?

#1, Yep

GL = Grand luxury, based on E-Class

GLC = GLK replacement
GLS = GL replacement

#2, Oh... OOOOHHHH... I get it now... the letters follow the sedans in terms of size class... is that what they're doing with the SL-branding scheme, as well?

#3, Correct. The third letter follows the car name. A is entry level.. Maybach is top level.

SLA, SLC, SLE , and SLS (though that might piss off people who bought the SLS AMG.)

As a lifelong Mercedes enthusiast, I can't fault this scheme. It makes more sense than GLK, GL, M, etc.. What I do fault is the styling (bland as Kroger-brand pretzels), and model numbers that don't make much sense (aside from 100 being base, and 600 being most expensive).

As they say, for every one step forward, it takes two steps backward.

#5, Yeah, to be fair, it may be coincidental/non-causational, but the moment the numbers stopped bearing any relationship to the engine size, I started losing interest in Mercedes as a whole...

#6, Same here. BMW too for that matter. Even Audi has fallen into it. The 3.0T is actually a supercharged engine apparently.

I mean, it was fashionable to ridicule alphabet soup names... but they actually MEANT something... now they're just marketing nonsense... now that they're just as meaningless as a made-up word, I say bring back the made-up words!
