Did Things normally have that huge bulbous air intake on the rear fender? (I'm assuming that's what it is)

#2, Nope, that must be a deep water fording snorkel, every one I"ve seen has just a regular slat air grate there.

#4, It still gives you a couple extra inches, and I think it's meant to just delay water getting in instantly, as opposed to making it able to run submerged.

VW Thing fans call those "earmuffs," and the air slots are actually on top. They're standard on all 1974 US-sold Things, though not the 1973s. Foreign market type 181s may or may not have them from 1974 onward; they were optional.

Note that the side vents on 181s/Things aren't actually for engine cooling (which, in typical VW fashion, is done from under the vehicle). These vents were instead to provide fresh air for the heater. The "earmuffs" were designed to keep road dirt and mud out of the vents.
