And here, circa 1991, we have down-on-his-luck Private Investigator Randy Taggart returning to his barely-functioning office above Mr. Zhou's shop after running out of leads on his latest going-nowhere case, looking into the death of some Joe-Schmoe longshoreman in a work accident for which his widow turned down a generous life insurance payout because it stipulated she couldn't challenge the findings of the coroner who never even did an autopsy... Little does he know he's about to survive a botched murder attempt that will blow things wide open....

#1, "Randy, Randy! Are you okay?"

"Yeah, sure Mr. Zhou. Someone cold-cocked me while I was trying to carry my groceries in. That's the fourth time in a week."

"All of your eggs are broken!"

"Well, at least they didn't break the one on top of my neck."

#2, So, I was out $50 in groceries, and one round of .45 ACP.... but I had at least one thing going for me, well, two actually. First, I figured I had at least a couple hours or so before my nemesis realized that his triggerman was now a corpse, instead of me. Second, I had a name.

Not for my assailant, currently congealing in my broom closet. He was least was smart enough to not bring a wallet to the job, but not his keys. Took a couple minutes of trying, but, the ones I fished out of his trousers eventually unlocked a no-frills Jeep Cherokee parked around the corner. White, clean, and as sterile as a fleet vehicle could be. According to the papers in the glovebox, it was owned by Integrated Security.

Figures. Budget Rent-a-Cops, all muscle, no brain, and prior felonies on just about every one of their goons. They keep docket at the court full of civil cases, that's for sure. It also happens that they provide mooks for Pier 29...

#3, ... Yeah, 29. It's no coincidence that was the same place our dearly departed working stiff, Mike Murphy, somehow took a header off a crane last week. The one the coroner said was an accident, despite the fact he wasn't trained on how to use it nor was there a ship along the slip the day he fell those 500 feet to the pavement... with the only witness being the security guard....

I trundled on towards the waterfront in my "borrowed" Jeep, if anyone asked, I was just returning it to them.

If there was any trouble, I still had seven rounds left in my pistol... enough to survive a few more "accidents"
