Description:
Cool movie, but possibly the worst car ever made into the Hero's personal ride, a Ford
Taurus

God I love that movie.

i expected him to drive a cool high-tech cruiser, but I think by him driving a Taurus, they wanted the effect that the movie wasn't set too far into the future...which was kinda cool.

Well, in the first movie, the Tauruses were modified in the front a bit. At the time, the Taurus was the most futuristic looking production sedans at the time, so that's probably why they chose them. Even thought this Taurus may seem dull and boring now, it was a pretty radical design in the mid to late-80s.

And think about it, for 87' the Taurus did look kinda futuristic. It didn't have a big steel bumper, had softer corners and sleeker look than most other cars.

Sorry. But you went into more design detail than I did.

The taurus was based on the new, smaller and more aerodynamic T-bird that came out i nthe mid 80's. In turn, it influenced just about everyone else. Soon chevy was making Luminas and Mopar was retiring the ol' Diplomat in favor of the less-boxy Dynasty, the Taurus may have been a lowly econobox, but it's styling set the tone for the 90's

The Taurus is one of the most revolutionary designs in the history of the automobile. And it gets no respect. Oh well, neither did the Chrysler Airflow. At least the Taurus sold like hotcakes.

And sadly, I don't think there is gonna be a single one left in good shape in 30 years, someone ought to get one in decent shape and put it in a garage. Everyone saves the big muscle cars and the luxury cars and the exotics, but no one saves the economy cars, even the good ones.

Well, I'm not saying that the Taurus is a car that's worth saving. I don't even care for it much. But there is no denying it's impact. And maybe you're right, since no one's thought of the 1st gen Taurus as a "collectible", all of them might just one day disappear into junkyards all over the country. We should save a few of them.

All the first-gen Caravans are reaching the end of thier lifespans too, those K-car powered 86's are all starting to rust, sputter and smoke. Someone ought to save at least one of them, it's the first MINIVAN for crying out loud! (prefferably one with faux-woodsides!) And while we're at it, someone save a 1990 Ford Explorer, first SUV.

Uhm...the '90 Explorer was HARDLY the first SUV, but it WAS the first SUV to start the SUV craze. You've got a good point about the '84 K-Car minivans...in about 10 years, if no one does anything about it, the only '84 K-Car minivans left will be rusted out shitboxes...

Well, anything before the 90 explorer I call a 4X4, the Wagoneer, the Bronco, the Blazer, they were all heavy duty 4X4's, meant for going into the woods, off road, no ammenities, no frills THe explorer was the first 4X4 to appeal to non-truck people, and the first real "SUV" maybe second only to the Cherokee.

Good Point. The Explorer was MUCH more civilized than the Cherokee.

GMC had the Jimmy in like 1969... That's an SUV...

I think that Low-Tech meant SUV that are civilized enough to be driven like cars on normal roads. The Jimmy drives like a truck, whereas the Explorer was really the first truck that tried to drive like a car.

ok, I'll agree with that. I still say the jimmy and it's bretheren (the wagoneer and the blazer) were SUVs. People consider jimmies and blazers small SUVs nowadays. BTW, do they still make the Jimmy? Haven't seen them in a bit.

Thirty years from now, there will be scads of Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes, Vipers and exotics from this era around still, because people see those as being worth saving. I don't argue, but the everyday cars will disappear entirely. We can see this in action. '65-'73 musclecars are pretty easy to find, but have you ever tried to find a family car from the same era?

The Jimmy's gone. It's been replaced by the 260hp GMC Envoy. The Jimmy's cousin, the Chevy Blazer is still around, but it's being fazed out and being replaced with the Envoy's cousin, the Chevy TrailBlazer.
