Interesting...reminds me of an Aussie Falcon from the '70s...you know, the kind they used as the Mad Max MFP police cars...

Since making that post I've learned a bit more about this car... and there's a reason it looks like an Aussie Falcon... this was Leyland's attempt to COMPETE in Australia against the Aussie Falcons and the Holdens...

...and it was a total, unmitigated flop.

[edit] Wow. Was 2005 really 3 years ago?! Yikes.

#2, Only lasted 2 years on the market.... coupe version was available as well.

Unmitigated flop was right....

But "Unmitigated flop" and "Leyland" aren't exactly antonyms

These are indeed interesting cars. Period reviewers raved about how modern they felt, and that they were much smoother, quieter, and more sophisticated than any of their competitors. On the flipside, they were also more expensive, lacked the long list of options their competitors had, and early production had some pretty nasty quality control issues, which (although taken care of early on) had a negative impact on the public's perception of the vehicle.

Here's the original brochure: http://oldcarbrochures.org/Australi...hure/index.html

And a ride inside a Targa Florio model like the one pictured above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7p2IsqAQks

I actually watched a mini-doc on these on YT recently... https://youtu.be/7iuLffRiDqE Very interesting. They did the same thing they did with the Morris Ital; styled it in-house, then hired an Italian firm to simply "refine" the design at the last minute.

It also goes into why the build quality and body panel stamping were so atrocious.
