I remember how these things made me drool when I was a kid, hard to believe they were relatively inexpensive Japanese cars.

#1, much like an Elise... affordable, but not very practical, which made them uncommon

#2, *deep breath* The original Elise, or at least the original concept of the Elise was under development in the early '80s when Lotus abandoned it due to financial woes (sound familiar?) Toyota purchased the plans, which were at a very early stage, and that became the seed for the AW11. And I actually argue that MR2, at least the first two gens, were quite practical in that they have both a frunk and a trunk which combined equal enough luggage space for a week long trip for two.
