Description:
Renault Super 5 GT Turbo drag racing.
Shame there isn't more of them, I imagine this would totally rock in the Mini Plus class (up to 1400cc and one power adder). |

The class also excludes rotaries (duh) and only FWD is allowed. |

From what I read, max reliable hp from a group A* C3J (seems the turbo version has the same designation? odd) is around 180hp. Even then, the little turbo spins so fast it literally eats itself up and has to be replaced before hitting 200km mark, else the risk of a blown turbo gets very high.
But again, it has to be remembered that this is a iron block 1400cc OHV engine, designed in the mid 80s. So that kind of power is still impressive IMO, especially since it pulls less than 800kg for a non-gutted car.
* This means a 'mild' build up by tuner standards. Forged internals, modified head etc. |

#7, Did some research. Actually, the Cleon engine series dated back to the 50s. While the engine itself, although a low revving powerplant, seems to be bulletproof (as long as you mind the revs of course), the problem seems to be the tight engine bay, that doesn't allow fitting big radiators/coolers. Basically, the cooling is a problem and if the water and oil temperatures are not carefully observed, the engine may go boom-boom before you can say 'you bloody cheese-eating surrendermonkey!'.
This engine can really shine in a 11 Turbo, which is big enough to allow more modifications. |
