It's fun to drive. Lotsa torque. Pulls strong to 5800 rpm. I'm upgrading the trans to a 700R4 w/ 2800 stall convertor this summer. Also changing the diff for a Ford 9" w/ 4.11 gears at the same time. Current diff is a Chevy 12 bolt, 3.41 posi.

A man named Don Yenko was the major "performance" dealer for many years and was very instrumental in laying the groundwork for the L 72 (427) Camaro. In years preceding 1969, Don Yenko performed numerous 427 engine conversions, as a few others did. However, when when he planned a new "Super Car" distributorship for the 1969s, he knew that demand would outweight his ability to perform all the labor, and time, intensive engine swaps. The logical solution was to convince Chevrolet to build a quantity of 427 Camaros under a Central Office Production Order (COPO). As the 427 cars were received, Yenko sent them to various shops to receive the special emblems, decals, stripes, and options ordered. Window stickers and other factory documentation were removed from the cars, and a YENKO window sticker was applied.
All 1969 Yenko Camaros were ordered with the optional spoiler package to complement the Yenko stripe design. (part 1 of 4)

Only six exterior colors were selected for the 1969 Yenko Camaros. These were Hugger Orange, Ralley Green, Daytona Yellow, LeMans Blue, Olympic Gold and Fathom Green.

Changes that were unique to the Yenko Camaro included, the "no emblem grill, "no console interior, special badges, decals and of course the "SPECIAL" headrest lettering (sYc) standing for Yenko Super Cars. Records indicated that there were only 198 Camaros built for Yenko under these COPOs.

"C.O.P.O. - Central Office Production Order (COPO). A system used to equip factory ordered cars with 427 CID engines and other special features."

Yenko 427 Camaro
The 1968 Yenko Camaro. COPO 9561, as it was internally known, was a bare bones Camaro (no A/C, radio, etc..) that Yenko would tear apart, make his own options, and at the heart of it all install a big block 427 V8 that would tear your face off if given the chance. Yenko owned a performance minded Chevrolet dealership in Canaonburg, PA. During the early 60's Don road raced modified Corvettes, and Corvairs that were prepared by mechanics at his dealership.
With the introducton of the Camaro by Chevrolet in 1967, Yenko began doing engine swaps for customers who wanted more performance than that offered by Chevrolet's Big-Block. He began shoe-horning L72 427ci into Camaros. Two horsepower ratings were offered: 435 hp and 450 hp as an option. Yenko and his associates transplanted 427 engines into Camaros themselves in 1967 and 1968. But in 1969, they were able to order cars with the bigger factory engines installed.
