I never really REALLY liked this generation of styling, but, for some reason, it looked best on the 1-series. |

So, despite the low mileage on my dad's two VW Cabrios, they're getting rather long in the tooth. He's decided it's time to look for another [used] convertible (he would get rid of his bluish/purplish Cabrio down here in Florida. It's 16 years old, and has ~60,000 miles on it... and it was in a wreck earlier in its life, so it's not perfect... his green one-year-newer Cabrio, with half the mileage and a higher trim level, would be shipped down here to FL).
Being the very large man that he is, he detests how most convertibles go for a "sporty" feel by cocooning the driver between the center console and door panel... He could barely fit in the BMW 6-Series, the 3-Series was a little tight, but he was impressed with how roomy the driver's compartment in the 1-Series is (he didn't like the newer 2-Series as much, in terms of comfort)... so he told a few local dealers that if they come across a used 128i convertible with low mileage and withOUT the bolstered "sport" seats, he'll buy it immediately.
He's intrigued by the idea of another straight-6 engine, a layout he has always been fond of, but hasn't had a chance to have since his '70 240Z... and he doesn't want a 135i, as most, if not all, come with the sport seats, and he doesn't trust the long-term durability/reliability of turbocharged engines. |

#3, Oh, and a sidenote to his search, he mentioned he wishes there were AWD convertibles out there (other than Audi, he refuses to even consider an Audi [combination of long-held prejudice against the company's actions past and present with various engineering/design controversies and their reliance on turbocharged engines]), so I jokingly mentioned the Murano convertible on the used market.
He didn't like it as a convertible (he remarked that, although the backseat was actually usable unlike most convertibles, for its massive size the trunk is no roomier than his VW Cabrio), but he actually REALLY liked the normal crossover version... he's been desperately trying to find a roomy, comfortable crossover with only 2-row seating to replace his aging Pacificas... and he found it. I also made a point to mention to him (since he has an engineering background) that the Nissan VQ is considered one of the finest V6s in the modern era (again, his prejudice against turbocharged engines precludes most modern crossovers that have turbo 4s.) |
