Ugly but awesome. Great find.

#1, Actually, I think the last of them were fairly respectable from a styling standpoint, but even toning down the vertical grille couldn't save them.

#2, Agreed... the only thing that made the '60 Edsel "ugly" was its baggage of having followed the prior two years.

I really like the '58 and '59 Edsels. The '60 was the only one I've never liked. :/

#4, Considering the Comet (eventually put under the Mercury marque) was developed from a stillborn idea for post 1960 Edsels, the "original" look of the 58's and 59's was probably doomed from the start, though, we can probably debate for a long time if that was due to a shift in design philosophy as a whole in that decade or a desire to quickly refresh something that didn't take and branded as hideous?

#5, The horsecollar was baked in from the start, it seems...

#6, Without the quad headlights and excess trim tacked on, you can actually see what the stylists were going for there.

#6, Woah. That's a new one on me. Never saw a prototype Edsel before... I honestly love obscure prototypes and styling-studies of cars... seeing what changed in production, what stayed relatively the same...

#6, I've heard the "production" grille was a lot bigger than any of the ones the original designers had drawn up sketches for, out of fear that the car wouldn't get enough airflow for cooling... but I have no way of verifying that.... still a pretty radical departure.

I have to say, the transition from two headlights to four headlights was not handled very well, at first...

The '57 Mopars were designed to accept quad headlights, and pulled it off alright in late '57 and 1958... but most other manufacturers had rather ugly '58s...

#10, I still contend that the Edsel was actually one of Ford's best-looking products in 1958. I honestly don't like the '58 Fords, Mercurys or Lincolns, or even that year of Thunderbird. The late-'50s slant-light Lincolns are slowly growing on me, but I'm not quite there yet.
