Description:
The 1928 Triplex land speed record car.

3 aircraft engines.
36 cylinders.
81 liters.
1500hp.
No gearbox.
No clutch.
Rear brakes.

The driver sat smack dab in the middle of the 3 engines. After the first driver was twice burnt by coolant leak and exhaust flames, he resufed to have anything to do with the obsolete heap of junk. The next driver was killed during a record attempt.

The first driver was Ray Keech, the second Lee Bible.
Below you can see the additional 'reverse axle'. This was necessary as the cars were required to have the possibility of reversing and was a common feature of 1920's land speed record cars. The axle was taken off for the record run itself:

Apparently Keech died just a few months after Bible's fatal attempt in another crash.

I always liked the old school record attempt cars, before the 60's when jet propulsion with no direct-drive to the wheels became the standard to break the record. They still have a class for purely wheel-driven cars though.

#3, Yeah, call me conservative, but no driven wheels = not a car for me.

#2, Interesting. Was it a water speed record crash? A few land speed record drivers moved on to water deeming it safer. They were wrong.

The last car to hold the land speed record that was wheel-driven was one that had 4 Chrysler HEMI engines in it, one for each wheel.....

#5, Apparently it was during a standard motor race, the Altoona 200-Mile Race in Tipton, Pennsylvania on June 15, 1929.

#8, That's only about 40 minutes away from me, there used to be a wooden oval track there where they raced up to around WWII, after the war, the place was torn down to make room for an airport for a post-war flying boom that never came, which in turn got bulldozed under in the 60's for a plate glass factory.

#9, Ah yes, board tracks. Another curiosity, limited to USA exclusively I think.

That must have been incredibly loud, hot and terrifying even while not crashing.
