My dad always thought the engine in his 240Z was awfully similar to a Mercedes straight-6... he and I were rather amused when we found the truth:

Prince Motor Company had actually licensed that straight-6 directly from Mercedes and made good use of it... when Nissan bought up Prince, they took note of the straight-6 and decided they wanted to use it, too... but either no one told them, or they just didn't care, that it was licensed from Mercedes. They kept using it without a license (which was contractually tied to the recently-defunct Prince company)... they're lucky Mercedes didn't sue their ass.

#3, I don't even think MB could sue them retroactively as I imagine that a statute of limitations for licencing violations has long since passed.

#4, I was mainly referring to the time Nissan was using the engine... not the present day.
