I saw one of these at a car show, they're not VW based, but they do use obvious off-the-shelf Beetle taillights, it was some low-production quasi-luxury-kitcar built by some company in Wisconsin.

There were lots of these MG kit cars back in the day. Some of 'em used Pinto 4 cylinders or Chevy straight sixes.
