A guy across the street from my high school restored one like this one, but a 4 door. Same color scheme and everything.

I know it's Wikipedia, so it's not definitive, but they actually list the Kaiser Dragon as being one of the earliest known examples of the kink.

#10, STEs were FWD from 1983 until AWD became an option in 1988 and then was made standard in 1989.
