Me too, but sadly, it seems to be one of those styling cues that had it's day and won't ever come back, like rocket ship tail lights, huge fins, it only ever seems to crop up as either a clear joke, or, a dedicated lover of the style incorporating it into something modern. Doubt you'll ever see factory exterior woodgrain on an economy car ever again.

A lot of those style cues came from the technology at that time and politics.
I can imagine the side of the car having a LCD. On it, it could have iphone's loading gif on the side indicating they are driving. When they reach their destination, it will show a map pin dropping. While it sits, it can show ads to help lower the monthly payment. Seems safe too. :p
