Description:
1985 Lada Samara S-Proto T3.
As far as insane '80s rally cars go, this one is right up there. The drivetrain is not Lada. Is Porsche. A 3.6L flat six mated to the Porsche 959's AWD system. |

Suddenly I find myself wanting a Porsche-powered Lada. |

So what is the story behind this? First of all, I find the date very fishy: 1985 was when the factory 959 first started the Dakar... I refuse to believe Porsche would give space age, top of the line power- and drivetrain to the Russkies pre-1989. My guesstimate is that Lada bought via some middle man a chassis of a 959 (either aborted/scrapped/crashed factory programme car... seems unlikely or perhaps a stock car or components thereof) and threw some fiberglass together with Samara headlights, windshield and doors. A shot in the dark but maybe around 1989-1992? |

#2, Well, Porsche WAS doing engineering work for Lada, even before the iron curtain fell... and you are right, it was 1989... I don't know why this one says 1985.
This was apparently an effort between numerous Russian companies, including, of course, Lada, and also Tupolev, and some other companies I've never heard of (Poch and NAMI)
It finished in the top 10 in both the 1990 and 1991 Paris/Dakar rally, driven by Jackie Ickx. |

#3, The Russian higher-ups never had a problem with revising history and the people do not seem to mind.
Porsche did some work for Lada (as well as for Seat in post Fiat and pre-VW days and Harley-Davidson) but I do not see them going from designing a head for a 4-cyl 1500cc boat anchor of an engine to sending a then-fresh hypercar drive and powertrain to them.
NAMI rings a bell, it's a reverse engineering research institute with a long history. |

#6, To be fair they had some of their own inventions and engineering solutions, and some other things they simply bought - like the first modern jet engine they simply bought from Rolls Royce - of course they never paid. I think it was Lenin that said 'the capitalists will sell me a rope and I will string them up on it'... |
