Vandals using new cars on passing trains as target practice are why they didn't make too many of those first-gen auto racks and hastily adopted the 2nd gens that added those galvanized metal sides

#1, Consequently - the introduction of metal plating on auto racks gave birth to rail graffiti; the long term societal impact of which has led to the acceptance of graffiti as an art form of which we know has contributed to the detriment of Western civilization.
