Description:
Mazda CX-30 Turbo.
Keeping my eye on prices; will probably go check one out in the near-future, just to make sure I'm not wasting my time thinking about a car that I actually won't like. No immediate plans to get one, but you never know. |

So, here's the story... I like my CX-3; I adore the BMW 128i. I have a one-car garage, and have an agreement with my step-mom to keep using half the garage of my dad's old place, one town over. With how unbelievably corrosive this area is, I will NOT leave a car outdoors. Besides, neither Mazda nor BMW have the best reputations for rust prevention.
Things may change, however, and it may come to pass that my stepmom can no longer allow me to keep using that garage. If that happens, it will be time to downsize to one car again. If I had never gotten a taste of driving that BMW on a regular basis, I'd probably be ok with the CX-3, but comparing the experience of the two... the CX-3 does not come off that great. It was built to be lightweight, and you can really FEEL it. Everything you touch and feel just doesn't seem as substantial and solid as the BMW's.
I also store my motorcycle in my one-car garage, so I have to be extremely mindful of the width of any vehicle I have. The BMW and Mazda have almost the exact same footprint, give or take a half-inch.
So this is where I am. I need a vehicle with the utility, practicality, and reliability of the CX-3, but the joie de vivre of the BMW. I'd miss the convertible top, but a sunroof would be nice. All of this within a similarly small footprint. |

#6, When I got the Fiat, my mother wasn't needing a wheelchair that much, if at all, and I was seriously considering a retractable-hardtop 3rd-gen MX-5. A local dealership had three 2013-2015 CPO ones, each with less than 10,000 miles on them, for extremely good prices.
Obviously, in retrospect, it's good I didn't get one of those. The Fiat's backseat was about as accommodating to the wheelchair as the BMW is, but the front seats folded more out of the way. |

#9, Fair. My interior isn't bad, still looks new for the most part, and the painted interior bits are holding up well. The only complaints I have are mainly towards the dealer at this point, and the pronounced turbo lag. The interior on the Kona feels more put together than the C-Max, for what its worth, and I'd put it in a class above Subaru as far as quality goes. I know, three years isn't much to go on, but so far, so good. Almost four years, and it's not flaking or plastics turning different colors. |

To address each post relative to the pic:
Dirf: I know there's a significant difference between a sunroof and a drop top. With all the windows down - a CX30 isn't a convertible - but it's not a terrible place to be when it's sunny.
The plastic wheel arches are off-putting for some - but when used with a complimentary darker colour - they don't really stand out at all. Soul Red is another matter.
Trunk space is kinda shite. The folding seats can make it useable - but for things like wheelchair - I'd bring it along for a dry-fit for any test drives you may have planned.
The CX30 interior is very - very nice. I didn't like leather seating and dashs because I've had a negative impression of leather for years; it being terrible in the summer and cold in the winter. The brown on black leather is the better choice over the white on black.
What may be off-putting for some is the control wheel between the seat. If you're used to touch-screens - the wheel may be a turn off. However - I can't say it's nearly as distracting as moving your finger across a screen (and subconsiously moving your head closer to the screeen as you do it) to change sources. The CD player may be a deal-breaker - but I've had an old 8gb flash drive pluged in under the armrest which hasn't given me any grief.
Skid: Depending on how tall Dirf is - rear leg room is shit. Mine is effectively a 3 seater - and I did try to make myself fit into a 3 and 3 sport. Cargo - outside of grocery-getting - isn't its strong suit.
RRB: The CX30 does have noticeable lag. Winter months on ugly steelies make me reach for 87 - which does make the whole experience kinda shit. 91 and the little sport mode switch (which doesn't sound as impressive as it is) actually makes the lag less of a concern as more torque is poured on. She does hook hard to the left when you punch it tho.
Mileage for me is about 9.0 to 9.4 on winter tires (21.1 to 22.1). I've never hit the estimated mileage of 7-something - but I'm doing lots of city driving.
The Kona - while definately a strong choice (especally in N trim) has a really line-drive interior. It doesn't feel special. Don't get me wrong; the Kona's interior is not a 2006 Malibu. It just doesn't feel as nice as the CX. |

#13, My bad. By 87 meant 87 octane. I'm being lazy and cheap during the winter months - but when I get the summer tires back on - I'll be on a diet of 91 until October.
Specs given on Mazda's site have 250hp and 320tq on 93 - which up until now I though also applied to 91. I'm going to have to find a 93 pump somewhere. 87 gives you 227hp and a reasonable 310tq.
NP for the insight. The whole package was a step outside my usual comfort zone of mid-range GM sedans. Granted - the CX is not pulling like an Ellis Juan - and I would love to have my old Camaro back and relive a retro-mod'd neon synthwave dream of an 80's that nobody can really remember anymore.
Still - chart out a route and test drive a CX. If you want to get out of crossovers altogether - try the 3 or 3sport in turbo trim. All 3 are filthy. |

#13, Also - some negatives.
The back up camera seems to collect rain drops which obscure the view. The top-spec trim doesn't have slow-crawl traffic cruise system whereas other trims do (might be different in the states). Top trim also deletes things like auto-dazzle mirrors - front and 360 cameras - and wiper-defrost zones. The lane-keep assist seems less competent that what I saw in the last gen Civic as the CX just seems to lazily bounce back and forth within the lane instead of right down the middle. The autonmous stop requres your right foot to jump in if needed. The HUD will occationally show incorrect speed limits that you know from experence aren't right.The fuel economy is rough and the tank is small. Piano black centre console might upset clean-freaks. You can't change audio sources while backing up because the screen needs to show you what source you're changed to but it can't when the back-up camera is on. While it might not matter in Florida - the heated steering wheel only heats at 10 and 2. What might matter in Florida is that the sun visor has an extension flap instead of an extension arm making it awkward to use. Sometimes the proximity key won't lock the car as you walk away. The ride isn't as comfortable as you might expect from a crossover. If you're going north - snow and ice will coat the front fascia and you'll be warned on the gauge cluster that the CX30 can't see shit and you'll have to use your senses to drive. Snow-drifting and shouting vauge Japanese sounding words and also makes the CX tail happy - same with hydroplaning which is not as fun.
Otherwise - I don't think you can go wrong with one.

#12, That's completely fair. I know it's not "special, and I don't really have much to compare it to beside a Ford C-Max SE, but, eh its nice enough. I got the Ultimate because the base trim felt slow, and I wanted AWD for winter reasons. My moms have a Forester, and have had a previous Forester and a Legacy, and despite Subaru's AWD claim to fame, I just can't with the interior. It's not "bad", I just don't feel their interiors match their price.
I ruled out Mazda because at least here, they have a strong propensity to rust heavily, prematurely than other cars do. Nissan, too, is strong in that regard. |

So, I've established requirements for a new car, if I were to consider one... reliable, fast, narrow, and good fuel economy.
This: Fails on the fuel economy... two others that have cropped up...
Dodge Hornet R/T: Narrow, fuel efficient (PHEV), and ridiculously fast. Reliability is to be seen.
…and, oddly enough, Toyota Prius Prime: Narrow, fuel efficient (duh) and (surprisingly) almost as fast as the standard Dodge Hornet. …and, it's a Toyota, so reliability is there. Only problem... they don't sell it in the Southeast. Though, I imagine its handling won't be up to par, as the Hornet is based on an Alfa Romeo chassis, and Mazdas generally have great handling. |

#19, Why not get a Stelvio (not Quadrofoglio? I know reliability is pretty iffy, but it can't be any worse than a Hornet or Tonale. |
