Actually, if you look at the connecting rod big end you'll see heat discoloration. The bearing starved for oil and spun in the rod. The rod then broke at the big end. The wadded up mess on the right is the remains of the rod bearing. It also broke a small hole out of the block and cracked the block through the oil pan rail.

Um, OUCH! But that's not the worst hand-grenaded engine I've seen, I worked on an 83' Wagoneer once, it's 360 siezed and blew at 70+ mph, 3 rods out the side, even chewed the teeth off the distributor gear, and broke 2 of the cam bearings, OUCH
