there was a twin turbo kit that I've heard about for the 4.6 that you can't spot from just looking at the engine (supposedly) |

I've seen a few twin turbo 5.0s (@ 5.0s vs The World) they involve MASSIVE infusions of cash to be any good, but are generally extremely impressive. |

#23, I saw one attempt at one on our forums 18456. Guess those weren't forged internals. |

5.0s are strong, but you need to reinforce them. I will admit to putting damn near $5k into the internals of my old Capri. |

#26, What exactly had been done to that one? We've heard about the Eclipse and the CRX, and I remember that you said you used the Capri at the dragstrip, but you never said exactly what it was (well, not that I know of). |

CRX's 1988 Mercury Capri
It was born with a 4cylinder and an automatic. I was looking for a project car around early '95 and was attracted to the 5.0. I got the Capri for a minimum investment. I bought a R302 4-bolt main block and began what turned into the most lengthly engine build I have ever done. I knew I was going to end up looking at a level of power most would term insane, so I got really serious with the internals, although the initial build wasn't looking at a whole lot of power. I ended up with an internally balanced Scat forged crankshaft, Speedpro rings, CP Racing low-compression slugs, and Scat H-beam rods (which I believe were rated for something around 750hp) With Twisted Wedge aluminum heads, a rather complicated mix of valvtrain componentry, and a cam that was realistically too much for the motor, it ran. Despite running lower than stock compression, it still put something around 250-260hp to the rear wheels... (con't) |

#34, Pretty decent output for an NA 302, considering what they were rated at from the factory |

...which was probably more due to the rev capabilities of the valvetrain than anything else (around 7,000 RPM no problem. I've always had a thing for insane RPMS) This was my driver for nearly two months, at which point I was being challenged quite a lot at the races, and had had enough of losing. Out went the 3.73s and 255/55 R 16 michelins, and in went 4.11s and M/T ET streets on 15x10 rims. Then I dove under the hood and didn't come out until about $5k later. In went a weiand blower, set up for roughly 11psi of boost. At the same time in went a Holley nitrous system, with jetting for around 150hp. (This was back before it was called NAAWSS, mind you) Add a rollcage, a 5" cowl hood, a mini-tub kit, a C-clip eliminator kit for the 8.8, a total new gearset for the T5, and a McLeod single-disc clutch. Easy 10.8. Learn about icing the intake manifold, etc, etc, and you're running a consistent 10.2, with occasional dips into the 9s. And that was my Capri. |
