I dunno if Rice will ever go away -
ever since there have been cars - there have been people modifying them. The price (both insurance and real cost) of a newer _real_ sports car is really beyond the financial means of most teeny-boppers. so they are stuck modifying sub-compact and compact cars. And if you really can't compete on the horsepower level, you sure as shit can compete on the 'bling' level.
That's what was great about the 60s musclecar thang - is the fact that you could buy a nice stripper car (like a Nova 350) and do some fairly minor work on it to make it fun. Now people are stuck with economy engines that are engineered for good mileage / dependability, not tire ripping torque.
I know there are import exceptions - the DSM family of turbocharged cars are fairly inexpensive and can be made to go pretty quick for cheap. But what these kids have to realize is that they can do alot better in the long run with an older mustang, g-body, camaro, etc if their primary |

(cont) interest is quarter mile action. I have _some_ respect for import tuners - as long as they keep away from the bad bodykit, wing, and bling. But it just doesn't get the same respect as a built big block
drag car. The sound and feeling of a large displacement engine just can't be replaced by a high winding schreechy engine. This is more of a gut level feeling for me than a logical difference of technology. |

BURRRRRNNNNNN.
Did you see the "models" on his site. YUCK. Ricers can't attract many nice looking women it seems, at least none who are:
-legal citizens
-legal age
-clean (as far as diseases)
-free (they usually have to pay them to pose with their cars, whether it be directly or indirectly by admission to a "show".)

#22, Oh I think Rice will go away...but it'll be replaced by something equally stupid. Everything we do is part of some trend, some just happen to have tradition, followings, and age, some that may last close to forever, while there are others that fade away. The favorite cars of most of the people who frequent this site seem more like true icons and legends, cars invented when true performance was quickly being realized. The truly cheap cars from the 60's and 70's have been forgotten, just as the truly cheap cars from the 90's and 00's will be forgotten. Some import examples may last, the 240Z, RX-7, and Supra have followings. But the lamer, cheaper vehicles will not, and will exit behind the traces of the Vega, the Pinto, the Pacer. And the Civic (used as the most frequent example) does not seem to hold even the same kind of following as the Beetle or the Mini. Rice will surely depart. What replaces it, however, is anyone's guess. (I'm staking it on crappy custom SUV's.) |
