#3, It's a name thing. Rockstar looked at an Olds Cutlass and later learned that "Cutlass" was a small sword (Also was named after a WW1 flying squadron - for which Olds name the car).

Looking for other names of swords to ally to the body style they had chosen for GTA:VC - they found sabre's.

it could have been worse - they could have gone with foil.

I would say they are both very similar.
I found the front of the GS to be extremely similar to the sabreĀ“s.
