When engaged in the manual mode, the default lowest gear is 2nd - won't let you shift into 1st.
However when I'm in manual and getting ready to shift into 3rd, the car will automatically downshift into 1st before I even get to upshift! Usually happens at random times and around or before the 2,800-3,000rpm mark.

Can anyone explain to me why this is?
Or is it just the usual: "Duh. It's a Ford."

And yes I do push this car hard at times.

These semi-manual automatic transmissions are just buggy across the board.

I've driven a G35 with one and never had this problem. - spirited test drive :)

The absolute worst part that irks me is the LS site.
The BMW M5 board: free
The Porsche boards: free
The NSX boards: free

The Lincoln LS boards: $35 to some husband and wife tandem.
They have a "trial" membership too which they never even acknowledged me on.

Guess I should look for some Jag owners for more advice.

#1, I've read a few reviews on these and never seen anything about that, so I don't think its normal :-/
