aren't "stock" cars supposed to look like stock cars?

#2, That notion pretty much ended in the early '80s... it was a slow progression from cars that HAD to have identical bodies to the street version, to what you see here (and the '03-'04 Monte Carlo NASCARs that look nothing like their street counterpart)

Quick summary
1983- Ford releases the new "Aero" Thunderbird, starts mopping the floor with the competition in NASCAR.
Chevy bitches to NASCAR, asks to slightly modify their cars bodies to compete, NASCAR allows them to.
1987-89- GM gets rid of their RWD G-bodies, NASCAR lets GM teams run cars meant to look like their FWD street coupes.
1997- Ford axes the Tbird (to the dismay of many), NASCAR lets them use the 4-door Taurus, which REALLY got the racecars to look radically different from stock.
2000- Chevy redesigns the street Monte Carlo, and the NASCAR version too...the NASCAR version actually looks rather different from the street version, namely, in the nose and grille area.

2001- Dodge enters with the 4-door Intrepid, which is basically identical to the NASCAR Taurus, with the differences being the front and rear clips.
2003- NASCAR implements the idea of making all makes "aero-equal" which means the greenhouse area on all makes have to be identical (They use the Taurus/Intrepid greenhouse for the greenhouse template). Chevy redesigns their NASCAR Monte Carlo to comply, and it looks nothing like the street version anymore. Pontiac switches over to the new 4-door Grand Prix, with their NASCAR Grand Prix looking little like the stock version. But Pontiac exits the sport after 2003.
2005- Dodge releases this thing...ugh.

The huge change in cars is what got me to entirely stop watching NASCAR, and in fact, got me to dislike it quite a bit. No offense Dirf, but I find NASCAR quite retarded now with "stock" cars going from 200HP FWD cars to 750HP RWD cars.

Its not so much NASCAR's fault though, if the big 3 had kept RWD cars, all would be good right now. oh and why do I get the feeling this things areo is going to suck ass

#8, I suppose your right, the companies deserve part of the blame, but NASCAR had a chance to control the level of modification and didn't.

#9, true, but NASCAR was just looking out for itself. think about it, do you think the big 3 would have kept a RWD sedan in their line-up just for racing?

#10, It didn't have to be a sedan, the T-bird sure wasn't. and GM could have switched to F-body shells.
NASCAR went to when the Homolagation rules went away

The only good thing about this new "Dodge" is that some of them will go straight into a wall.

Hmmm....I think I've made my peace with this car...I'll have to see what it looks like with whatever headlight decals Dodge decides to put on it. I may actually like this new bodystyle in the long run...there are just too many Dodge drivers that I really like for me to shun Dodge's NASCAR effort simply because their car looks like a dustbuster that had its front end sucked out by another dustbuster.

Heh, the "grille" area is so pronounced that it reminds me of the old Chrysler "letter" cars.

One has to wonder if the styling department of DaimlerChrysler motorsports got Chris Bangle on loan from BMW... >_<
