Description:
Richard Petty's 1978 Dodge Magnum. The car that killed his consecutive years with at least one win streak.

He went winless, and if he hadn't switched to GM products towards the end of the season, he probably would have finished outside the top-10 in points.

1979 would be different, he would win the Daytona 500 in an Olds, and go on to win his 7th championship driving a variety of GM cars.

For most of '79, he drove a Chevy Monte Carlo, except at the big tracks where the Olds Cutlass had better aerodynamics. In 1980, he would give Chevrolet their 100th Winston Cup victory. In '81, he would drive a Buick Regal to victory in the Daytona 500. By '84 he was nice and comfy in the seat of a Pontiac, winning that year's Firecracker 400 at Daytona, and driving that brand for the rest of his career.

You know... it would be kinda cool if you could recognize different brand cars in NASCAR again, like... a different car instead a different set of headlight stickers... but thats been said quite often around here...

yeah, that would be better...this "everything is the same except the stickers" thing sucks

#2, The current Dodge Charger has quite a different front end from the Monte Carlo and Taurus... (not just decals)

...quite an ugly front end though, IMO.

#4, Yeah, it has the recent Dodge-trademark grille, but body-wise? Is there really a difference? It they would resemble their street counterparts in a way that the DTM cars do with theirs... that would already be a step in the right direction. But after all... NASCAR is popular as hell as far as I know, so they might be doing everything right.

#5, Yeah, all the cars have "common templates", which means their bodyshapes are completely identical, the only pieces different can be the front clip in front of the hood, and the rear clip from the base of the spoiler down.

NASCAR is gearing up for the "Car of Tomorrow", which will be a smaller body, more boxy, and a larger "greenhouse"... they want to "dirty up" the aerodynamics of the cars, in an effort to provide better racing... more passing, less "follow the leader" style racing.

#7, Not that I've heard. The Goody's Dash series ran OHC engines (V6s) towards the end of that series' run (NASCAR sold it off in 2002[?], and it's since died)

The only big change on the horizon that I know of, when it comes to engines, is to get them to run on unleaded gas.

#6, There isnt that much coverage of NASCAR over here, but I remeber about 10 years ago, that I was pretty fascinated by the side-by-side-around-the-track action. I think that was the time when the old DTM died away and F1 started to rule out overtaking on the track.

#9, NASCAR is really trying to get back to the way the racing was in the '80s... in the 1984 Talladega 500, there were 71(!) lead changes among 13 drivers, and that was only at the start/finish line.

#10, It would be good if they could come back to that... maybe even incorporate one or two more roadcourses... so that I can finally be pissed again as all I get to see from it are 15seconds on CNN.

#11, There's talk of holding a NEXTEL Cup race at the Mexico City roadcourse (a Busch Series race was run there earlier this year), and at some track in Canada called the "Molson" roadcourse, or something like that. I think CART runs there. All just rumors right now though.

#13, Toyota pressed for it, and as much as NASCAR wants diversity, they had the muscle to basically tell Toyota, "Want to play on our field? Play by our rules."

Honda has also expressed interest in entering NASCAR racing, and I doubt NASCAR would bend the rules for them either.

Aren't there differences in side rear windows?
And Honduh with no Vt3Kkk won't win.

#16, Yes, they wanted to play on NASCAR's field, so they followed NASCAR's rules.

They designed a carbureted, iron block, 353ci OHV V8 for NASCAR competition...quite a nice engine too... and if they modified it into a civilian FI version, possibly with an aluminum block, it might make the Tundra more competitive in the pickup-truck market.

But, of course, they won't.

#18, yes, the rear-side windows can be any damn shape the auto manufacturer wants them to be, as long as they "sorta" resemble the rear-side windows of the production vehicle the racecar is supposed to look like.

Heh, on a program about Richard Petty, they had Darrell Waltrip on...

"That STP Charger... that was such a beatiful racecar. It was the best looking racecar out there. And then 1978 rolled around, and there was the Magnum. That thing was a dumptruck."
