There was actually a turbo variant of the 1500 OHV built. Quote from Pawe³ Przybylski, one of the great rally drivers of the time:
A turbo was really more than this 50s engine with crankshaft resting on 3 bearings could take. The only time it delivered real power was when the wastegate valve clogged up and the turbo started to build up some serious pressure. After one special stage, the engine's insides were all melted and cracked and this was the end of that rally for us.

#2, Well, it was a good car in the 1970s... problem was, they stopped making it around 2002 >_<

#4, And why shouldn't they? They have a new fuel injected 1.7 engine and stuff... it's a tough, roomy car that is sold at the price of scrap. It requires almost no maintenance and can operate in even the worst conditions problem free.

#5, ah. I just assumed it still had the same tech it had back in like 1980 or whatever.

#6, Well, it's still basically a Fiat 124... back from the 70s, so you get big tranny/drive shaft tunnel and live axle at the back (but a farily modern 3-link with coil springs). I think they could have upgraded the brakes (to 4 disks, but the car is surprisingly light so disc&drum set-up was OK), upholstery...
The biggest problem would be the fuel tank's location (in right rear quarterpanel), I imagine this makes the car illegal in most countries.

#7, That and the fact it fails crashtests. Which is weird, Polonez and Fiat/FSO 125p do surprisingly well in those, and the age of the platform is not that much different.

#2, It's what you do with a lame car that counts. :P
