The rules may have changed, but for a while, some of the NHRA classes would NOT let you use any car that was FWD from the factory, so quite a few Opel's ended up converted like this because the demise of the RWD chassis left amateur racers with not much else to use post late 70's, unless you want to see nothing but 3rd gen Camaros and Fox Mustangs. There's dozens of these still on the NHRA circut, so it's not like they're being wasted just for kicks.
