That's a very short shifter. Are things like that comfortable to operate? |

#3, Yes. The MKI Miata/MX-5 has a very similar shifter and it's the best I've ever operated. |

#4, I think that possible only when you have a high tunnel, where you can hide the shifter mechanism, I guess there's some leverage necessary to make it work good. |

#5, You're right, the majority of the mechanism is simply hidden - if the pivot point was truly that short it would probably feel awful. |

#6, There are people that saw off their shifters to be as short as possible... think 'no knuckle cleareance' short. |

Speaking of shifters and stuff... from my experience:
Most 'scratch yer head' linkage: Fiat Tipo; one bar shifter side, two bars gearbox side, everyting seems to move independently of each other... weird but works fine and gears make that cool click when they slide where they belong.
Shittiest shifter and linkge: Renault Super 5. The shifter ends with some kind of a rubber box, the linkage is one long rod the diameter of a pinky finger (I actually managed to bend it on my first car, when I tried to squeeze in 1st gear while breaking to a 180 turn), and gearbox side, it ends in a rubber pimple full of little screws, springs and such. This pimple is also the lowest part of the car, so if you rip something off, that will be it, the rest (oil pan, gearbox itself) is neatly hidden inside the motor subframe. Despite that, shifting is good and travel is OK, but as the car ages, this gets worse (I misshift to 3rd instead of 5th some times). |

#8, Best: FSO Polonez. Seriously. It had a firm, 'springy' feel to shifting, the shifter seemed to slide into and out of gears so naturally. But I guess that's because there was no linkage at all, the shifter came straight out of the gearbox ('orangutan shifter'. |

#9, Straight from the box is the best method.
Worst shifter I ever used was on a Plymouth Horizon - like rowing a dowel rod through a tightly packed bucket of rubber balls. |

#10, Well, in my first car I described shifting as 'yanking a corpses' arm' :P |

I also liked the 740, and that little 'clack' that the reverse gear ring made when it jumped back... perfect.
What I cannot imagine using: on the tree and old Renault 'door handle' style shifters. I mean, I know how they operate in theory, but in practice... |

#13, Best I tried was on my friend's old MR2, the G35 and the Probe GT (1997). |

#13, "door handle"?
#14, what gen MR2? The SW20 had a very nice shift action, but the AW11s is even better with an action and appearance similar to a MKI Miata. |

Not sure I can say what the best I've tried is (probably a Datsun 280ZX), but I know the worst was a 2003 Jeep Liberty 2WD, 5 speed. |

Well the absolute worst was a 1998 Freightliner FL80 with a small Cat and a 10 speed.. but that doesn't really count :p |

#18, Now I can definitely say the best shifter I've used was in my Miata.
Worst is still that Liberty I test drove.
