And unless it's the AWD version, that wing ain't helpin' him much. Hell, it probably wouldn't help him much with AWD. |

CRacer: Trust me, I know the guy that owns the car. It's pretty fast. They had a crappy RS that they blew up and used for some shots. And because of where the turbo is on a 4G63, you couldn't see it from that angle, really. |

probably something along the lines of that's not the car from the slow and the happy. It's not. It's just the same engine as the car from the slow and the happy. |

about this movie "The Fast and The Furious" should have been called, "The Dumb and The Vacuous" It is aimed at the hot rod and bubble gum set and plays like a Sam Katzman B movie out of the sixties called "Hot Rods to Hell" starring Dana Andrews. Wait a minute …..I was the assistant director on that film. Well I guess we all work on one stinker in our careers. It's full of hot chicks, hot cars, and hot morons shooing automatic weapons for no apparent reason.

It opens with a pretty cool hijacking scene in which three souped up Honda Civics take over a semi truck while it rolls along at 70 and up miles an hour. Car to truck transfers and even a Honda slides under the trucks trailer to avoid on coming traffic, then shoots out again to overtake the truck. Don't try this at home as a Honda civic won't really fit in there even if it was slammed to the ground with low inflated tires and would cause bodily harm to all involved. Next we meet Brian Spindler (Paul Walker) who shows up to a street race in a green Eclipse with enough horsepower and Nitrous Oxide to blow up a city block. He wants to race Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his gang of street racers. He puts up his car as collateral for the entry fee. I never could understand why anyone would race for pink slips cause if you won why would you want a slower car as winnings? Anyway Brian is really a undercover cop infiltrating these street race gangs to find out who is hijacking trucks |

with high performance cars. They don't seem a bit interested that these hot rodders are going 160 miles an hour down your local 35 mile zone. Another gang of oriental street racers, led by Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) (who has an old beef with Dominic and his gang) shoots up Brian's green eclipse after Brian looses it to Dominic in the race. Brian falls for Dominic's sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster) and becomes close to Dominic but later has a dilemma with respect to his loyalty to the badge and the honor and respect of his newfound "racing family". If all this doesn't make sense and sounds utterly stupid don't worry it's not you.

A hoppin' soundtrack, cool cars, fast races, hot chicks, bad dialogue, a done so many times before story and some rockin' stunts all add up to senseless mucho tough guys and butter all over your popped corn.
The director Rob Cohen (Dragonheart), who I have worked with several times and is a great guy to boot did the best he could with a poor script.
Gary Scott Thompson wrote some really weak dialogue with lines like "He's got nitrous oxide in his blood and a gas tank for a brain." Or "I live my life a quarter mile at a time?" Were not talking Shakespeare here.
Vin Diesel took the lead in performance from this ensemble. Some of his previous credits are Pitch Black, Boiler Room and he also had a part in Saving Private Ryan. He is a marvelous talent and you will be seeing a lot more of him in the future. But the real star of the film was Nitrous Oxide. (A gas mixture of nitrogen and oxygen, which can add 50 to 400 more horsepower to your engine.)

Just to show you I'm not some old hard ass who is trashing this film because I don't approve of racing cars, (well I am old but) I have raced cars and owned hot cars all my life. I have street raced also and I currently am driving a 2001 Lightning pick up just like the red one Brian drives in the film….. well not just like, mine has a 610 horsepower nitrous oxide engine which went 11 seconds in the quarter mile last weekend and it's a pick up truck. I'm not happy with the way they portrayed the racing and engines, plus the many mistakes or misnomers if you will about the main star of the film, which was Nitrous Oxide. Here are some of the mistakes!! |

1. There is no manifold warning light associated in a street NOS system.
2.They did not show a purge valve, which no serious street racer would be without. The camera even showed the effect of the nitrous going thru the lines before entering the engine. You want the nitrous at the engine to get instant fire.
3. They showed two buttons for a large system. Nos has a computer to go first stage then second stage automatically.
4. They state in dialoge the rings burn when in fact when things go wrong and the right fuel is not present the nitrous will burn right thru the piston tops themselves
5. Nitrous doesn't cause fire out the tail pipes like it was shown. Only jet engines do that.
6. They show pushing the nitrous button in third gear when its pushed usually as soon as the tires hook up in first gear.

7. You reach top speed in the quarter mile in 6 to 12 seconds with nitrous in a performanced engine. There races were 45 seconds or more. A stock VW bug will cut a quarter in 17 seconds.
8. And finally for street cars, Nitrous bottles are rarely if ever mounted in the drivers area. It's put in the trunk. Below is a picture of a car that the nitrous bottle blew up in. I ask you would you want that bottle mounted next to you?

I was surprised that all the race cars were Japanese imports. There was only one American Muscle machine which was Dominic's secret weapon ( a chrylser hemi engine with a 671 jimmy blower and Enderly fuel injection) but the fact is everyone knows the Japanese cars are no match in a quarter mile for the big bore American cars. A Keith Black engine puts out 2150 horsepower on gasoline. Pro Mods like Paul Trussell's nitrous-injected 1963 Corvette turns a 6.313 second quarter mile at 223.95 miles per hour and Alan Pittman pulled a 6.217 second quarter mile hitting 226.24 miles an hour. The writers of the film had Dominic saying he was scared to go 9 seconds like that was the big deal. Gary Scott Thompson didn't do his research on the subject matter. |

But for all those who don't know and like street racing they will probably enjoy the action at least. Though I have street raced in the past I no longer condone it. It's foolish and gets innocent people killed. Hopefully the police will see this film so as to encourage the building of a quarter mile track in Los Angeles that can be used every weekend. At this time only one in Pomona is available and it's only used twice a year. The one in Palmdale is not in good condition and at and at a high elevation, creates density altitude and doesn't allow the engines to perform as they would at sea level. The street racing would greatly diminish if we had a useable ¼ mile track in the LA Area.
"have a nice day" :o) hehe |
