Description:
Okay, lets say this Camaro rolls up to you at a light in the summer of 1969. You think
you can take it, you thought wrong. This is one of only 69 sutch Camaros built with
COPO order #9560, that little detail equipped this car with the all-aluminum ZL-1 427
BB, the steet verison of Chevy's NASCAR race engine, say hello to 430 HP, and if tuned
for dragging, 500+. Fewer than 30 remain today

#20, It was inferior, that's why we've never mentioned it in the past.

1970

The Sultan of Brunei owns the only '69 Handcode, a '69 Handcode SS, 2 '70 Handcode SS's, and an '87 Handcode II.

And don't forget the competition:

Estimated production of the Ford Cibra:

1970-----------4

Despite superior sales, Ford decided the sales "weren't superior enough" and that it wasn't necessary to continue production of the Cibra.

#24, I've never heard of that one. What was the story on it?

There WAS a 1971 Handcode CONCEPT produced...but it never saw the light of day...

Probably because proposed emissions restrictions would have decreased the hp from 800 to 500, and Chevy thought that would be a travesty to such a great nameplate.

#27, The 800 hp figure, of course, was estimated. GM never actually accurately dynoed the car, because it broke all their dynos.

#29, Also, they didn't want INSURANCE companies to know the real figure.

#30, True. They had to give it a very conservative rating. They thought that 800 hp might be believable.

they say that the Sultan o Brun had a dyno that was strong enough for both the handcodes one dyno'd at over 1154 hp and the II dyno'd at about a frightening 2200 hp

#31, Of course, when you could spin the tires from a dead stop in 8th gear, you KNEW it was more than 800hp...

#32, yeah but the II made the 2200hp at 20000rpms, so it wasn't as good on the street as the first Handcode

From what I hear, Chevy is producing a NEW concept that MIGHT wear the Handcode hame...

It's based on the Holden HSV 427 race car, but with a scratchbuilt 600ci V10 with QOHC, twin-supercharged, twin-turbocharged, and a HEAVILY beefed up AWD system.

#34, Yeah, the original could only rev to 12000 rpms. Some say that the valves and lifters were actually made of Roswellium, but this has never been substanciated.

#38, There was no Handcode III or beyond....the II was the last one until this supposed concept. Though, many at GM WANTED to make a III....
