#19, I've been discouraging her from getting one. Mainly because she says she doesn't like crossovers, and wants a real car instead.

She's also been considering a late-model Elantra, since she likes mine and also had good luck with the 2010 model she had a few years ago.

Kona. :P, or a Tucson honestly.

#21, First-gen BMW X1. Like my CX-3, it's almost as low as a "real" car, and it's on the incredible 3-Series chassis (shortened a bit, and has essentially a 1-Series interior)

Should have the room/practicality of the Journey, shouldn't be any less reliable, and it'll just be a very nice car to have.

#23, She wouldn't get a BMW. She knows someone who had an E92 3 series, and the parts prices and relative unreliability put her off.

#24, As someone who had an E90 in the family, and a Mini, I would agree with this sentiment.

I like the Hyundai idea. Either the best Elantra or Kia Forte she can get, or a solid used Sonata or Optima. I'm guessing she isn't made of money and doesn't care so much about resale value as having a reliable daily driver.

#26, I second this, as far as practicality and value for money goes. I would say anything from them since 2014-2015 should be a good bet. What about a Kia Soul, as far as ease of entry/exit?

She wants something newer than the Buick (which is a 2015) and it can't be over $20k. Mileage had to be somewhere under 50k, at least, and it has to be comfortable. She hates "chintzy" interiors.

#28, Mazda CX-3. My 2016 was $16k with only 16k on the odometer. Hmmm... that's a lot of 16s...

The interior is quite lovely... pseudo-luxurious.

#29, I haven't experienced any recent Mazdas, but I did enjoy the interior of my dad's Mazda 3.

Actually, Mazdas in general... unfortunately, there are literally none within 50 miles of Meridian on Auto Trader... some a bit further away

...and if you want to go the Korean route, this is my bias, simply because I think Kias are far more handsome than Hyundais:

#31, I rented a Mazda 6 like that white one. I really liked it to drive, not nearly so much as a back seat passenger. If your mom drives alone most of the time, it's a nice car.

#31, Traveling a bit isn't too much of an issue; she bought her current secondary vehicle (2009 Dodge Ram) in Mobile, and her last three vehicles before that (including the Buick) in Jackson.

She traded it today, and ended up breaking her price limit: She got a new white 2020 Nissan Altima base model. Apparently with a hefty rebate and her decent credit, she got monthly payments where she wanted them.

I drove it a little while ago. Seems okay, oddly similar to my Elantra, except a little bigger, less raucous, and with softer and less bolstered seats.

ah shit. :( I hope it works out for her. I don't really like Altimas. Nissan lost its stride about a decade ago, IMO but some of their newer cars are nice. I like the Kicks, but its underpowered as shit :(

I could write a book on my disdain for post-2007 Altimas but they're fine cars for people who simply want a car.

Sounds like one of the most boring options possible but at least it'll have a warranty on the CVT.

#36, I've had a pretty negative opinion on Nissans in general, after my POS Sentra that I had for only a year.

...that did change a bit, however, when I drove my dad's Murano Platinum... my God it's still the nicest vehicle I've ever driven. The tech, the comfort, the interior materials quality. Though, I realize Nissan probably puts more effort into their profit-heavy crossovers rather than sedans... and, yeah, with Platinum trim, you certainly get what you pay for.

I will say that the 1995-1999 Nissan Maxima and its corporate rebadge are damn nice cars. :D Especially for a straight up trade in exchange of a 2004 Accord with nearly 300k on it.
