Were these really that bad? I once read an article about open road racing, and they considered an about equal vintage Camaro a better base car than the Corvette for the 200mph class.

They weren't necessarily bad (though they have some ardent detractors), but Camaros of the era had the same drivetrain, roughly the same weight, and were actually more aerodynamic.
