I recall reading somewhere that the wing didn't even have to be that high for aerodynamic purposes, except that it wouldn't clear the open trunk lid otherwise.

#4, Structural reasons, perhaps? Maybe it's much more effective being bolted to a piece of metal that is bolted to the car, rather than being attached to a piece that is only connected to the car with a latch and hinges?
