Description:
The first about 2 score of vehicles involved in a nasty fog-related pileup on the New Jersey turnpike in 1969.
Apologies for the poor quality of the pictures here and below; they're scans from the NTSB report, which seems to be the only sources anywhere for information on this crash. |

At 7:45 AM on November 29, 1969, a heavy fog rolled onto the New Jersey Turnpike. A southbound blue 1969 Mercury Monterey 2 door (above) entered the fog about half a mile north of Exit 2, and slowed to around 30 mph. A 1965 International tractor ( http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ski...038d81.jpg.html ) towing a 1965 Downingtown MC331 propane tanker did not slow, and struck the Mercury from behind at around 70 mph, the trailer overturning across the road. The driver of the Mercury survived, the driver of the truck was killed. Several other vehicles ended up crashing into the tanker and each other, in order:
1. White 1965 Dodge Dart 2 dr
2. Blue 1965 Chevrolet II 4 dr
3. 1963 Chevrolet (unnamed, but a full-sizer) 4 dr
4. 1962 Oldsmobile (unnamed) convertible
5. 1969 Dodge Dart 4 dr
6. 1969 Oldsmobile (unnamed) 4 dr
7. White 1966 Mercury (unnamed) 2 dr
8. 1969 Dodge (unnamed) 4 dr
9. 1970 Oldsmobile (unnamed) 4 dr

Following this, a 1965 Mack tractor towing a 1957 Fruehauf van trailer, struck car 9 from the previous post, which was in turn pushed into car 8. Another 1965 International tractor, this time towing a 1968 Trailmobile van trailer, also plowed into the scene, striking the original tanker's propane tank and igniting its 9,257 gallon payload, in turn igniting the nearby cars ( http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ski...cc56cd.jpg.html - cars 3 and 4 are seen pictured, with 5 barely visible behind them).
Three more cars crashed into the cab of the orignal tanker: another white 1965 Dodge Dart 2 door, a 1966 Dodge (unnamed) 4 door, and a 1969 Cadillac (unnamed) 4 door. All visible here: http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ski...e3dcd2.jpg.html |

A 1966 Plymouth Valiant 4 door stopped short of the scene, but it was rearended by a 1967 Jaguar coupe (unnamed, but clearly not an XK-E from the picture). The Jaguar was in turn rearended by a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. Pictured: http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ski...1da3e3.jpg.html
A 1965 White tractor towing a 1962 Gindy van trailer stopped short of the accident scene, as did a 1963 Pontiac Tempest 2 door behind it, towing a small U-haul trailer. A 1966 GMC tractor towing a 1966 Great Dane van trailer did not stop in time, however, and plowed into the back of the Tempest, igniting an explosion which immediately killed its two occupants. 1966 Pontiac Bonneville Safari wagon stopped short of the crash scene, as did a 1966 Ford Fairlane 4 door behind it. A 1969 Safari wagon couldn't stop in time, evaded the previous two cars, but grazed the guard rail. A 1968 Pontiac Bonneville followed it, stopping along the road side without striking the guard rail. A 1968 Mack tractor, towing a 1969 Strick van trailer, also couldn't stop. It struck the left rear of the Fairlane, pushing it in the 1966 Pontiac. It also squeezed the 1968 Bonnville into the guard rail. Pictured: http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ski...dd4952.jpg.html
Two unnamed Chevrolet 2 door hardtops, a 1967 and a 1968, entered the crash scene afterwards, and each glanced off several other cars without any serious impact or injuries. |

All told, there were 6 fatalities and 18 injuries reported, 3 of which were considered serious. 29 vehicles were involved in some fashion, including two additional tractor trailers which avoided contact with any other vehicles. NHTSA placed the blame on a combination of the sudden change in weather conditions, combined with reckless driving from at least six of the drivers involved. |

#7, Hmm. wait. I was going off what I thought were the wire wheels. Hold on.
It appears the only Jag two-door at that time was an XKE.

#8, I can't find any Jags of the time period with that rear window. I'm wonder if it's some sort of coach-built coupe by Bertone or somebody. |

Holy shit. I've seen two pieces of advice regarding such situations, very different from one another:
1) stop, bail over the armco, call for help,
2) don't stop, drive through the mess or as far forward as you can, then stop and call for help.
You can't do the 2) if the road is blocked by fire, obviously. Not sure which one makes more sense, getting out of the car seems like a very bad idea, even if this is only to get behind the barrier. |
