Chromillusion paint? Really? What is this, the era of sub-$2 gas, Clinton vs. Bush, JNCO jeans, and boy bands?

#1, Did you hear Microsoft might be releasing a console to compete with the PS2? It won't last.

#2, DREAMCAST 4EVA YO!

By 2015.... SEGA will have CORNERED the video game market!!!! Sony may be a respectable second, and it wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo was out of business, I mean, come on! You think you can stay in the market when you only make KIDS GAMES! It's mario this... mario that.......... dude, people are SICK of Mario, but you just keep on going, like it's still 1987 or something.... get a REAL mascot with appeal to more than 4 year olds, like SONIC!

And the idea that MS would even TRY to make a console is so laughable, I won't even respond. What's the launch title? Blue Screen of Death Simulator 2000? HAR HAR HAR!!!!

#5, The failure of the Dreamcast still bugs me... it was an amazingly innovative console... the PS2... wasn't.

#6, Accidentally releasing out-of-synch with the rest of the industry has doomed lots of innovative and well respected companies because they couldn't recoup their massive development costs, release too late, and you're behind the times, release too soon, and people can't justify spending the money on features they don't need yet (yes, the machine is fast, but, the one I have right now isn't slow and none of the current software can really take advantage of that extra speed)

And FWIW, Dreamcast was just the last bullet in the chamber for SEGA who'd been shooting themselves in the foot for years prior to that.... the bungled launch of the Saturn, the wasted money on add-ons to the Genesis when it was already the twilight of the 16 bit systems... mismanagement did them in, the Genesis was just such a success that it took them 15 years to burn through their coffers.

#8, It can't hold a candle to the, ATARI 7800!!!!

I still remember the commercials for that system, they tried to release an 8 bit system into a 16 bit market... and thought they had a chance. The TV spots had side-by-side comparisons, and they actually TRIED to point out how the Atari was better than the NES... because.... the Atari had "Fantastic Games!" and the NES had "a toy robot!" and I specifically recall them MOCKING the robot with that statement. IN reality, it was a stealth NES ad, because, it has a ROBOT? Really?! Lemme at it!!!! (R.O.B. was frustratingly complex and only ever worked with one game, but still...)

On a semi-serious note, I sold my old Atari 2600 (sans controllers, hence it's disuse) and game library to a retro-games enthusiast for $50. More for the sentimental clod in me who can't stand to put his childhood toys in a landfill, even if he never will play them again.

#9, I had the Odessey2 and yes, I miss it.

That ad did backfire but that R.O.B was hilariously bad. Gyromite game just didn't work well at all with ROB. The fact the character couldn't jump was really frustrating.

#10, I got more mileage out of ROB by using him as the "alien invader" that terrorized my lego and wood block cities until the armed forces took him out in Operation: Whiffle Bat

ROB was still important, because it helped get the NES on store shelves. After the collapse of the home videogame industry, retailers didn't want to waste money or shelf-space on stocking another videogame system.

So what did Nintendo do? First, they designed the NES to look like contemporary VCRs, and, with ROB, they convinced people the NES was a "toy", not a videogame console... hell, the name it self, "Entertainment System" was chosen specifically to avoid "Videogame Console"...

Stores were convinced to stock it, and the rest is history.

#12, The light gun periphery was actually quite good, considering the primitive technology of the time and CRT monitor TV's of varying size, almost EVERYONE remembers Duck Hunt, very few remember Gyromite except as "that game that came with it that I never played"

Speaking of retro videogames, I am totally in love with both my NES and SNES Classic Minis... and, even though Sega will be releasing an official Mega Drive/Genesis Mini, it's being designed/programmed/built by AtGames, which will most likely end in disaster. (I have Plug-n-play versions of the Genesis and Atari 2600, both by AtGames... they were both presents, and they're both rather crummy, unfortunately.)

I heard there's a new "C64 Mini" coming out (They licensed the Commodore 64 software and a number of games, but not the "Commodore" name itself)... I was intrigued, until I read/watched some reviews. Wow that thing really sucks.

...but you know what's getting awesome reviews? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D1KN661 Fuck... I'm really REALLY tempted... but I'd need controllers, and that would add another ~$50 to the equation.

I've been retrograming the PC early 90's, getting all the old Wolfenstein clones off Steam that I could never beat back then. (Shadow Warrior, Blake Stone)

I got the first two Max Paynes and Serious Sam games on Steam recently....less than $10 for all of them.

Serious Sam, in particular, has been great to zone out to while listening to podcasts. It's just non-stop zerg rush with basically no plot.

#15, Mercifully - Cyan just patched Riven on Steam. No 5 part discs required - although visually everything looks exactly like it did in 1997 stretched out to fit newer monitors and TV's.

However - they completely redid Myst with realMyst:ME using the Unity engine - and everything rendered in 3D looks 1000x times better than the entirely pre-rendered glorified slide-show with Quicktime video inserts that was the original Myst.

I need to get back to Blake Stone thorough.

Blake Stone... now that's a name I've not heard in a lonnng time... a long time.

...I seem to remember the doors making a velociraptor-esque noise when they opened. ...audio which was later cribbed for Barneystein 3D (re-skinned version of the freeware Wolfenstein 3D, with Butt-head and Beavis as the guards, and Barney as the end-level boss.)

#18, It did introduce some revolutionary mechanics for the time, it had some of the same stuff as Wolf 3d, like hidden secret doors, and collecting bonus loot in addition to killing enemies, but also had things like enemies dropping ammo proportional to how much they'd fired at you before being killed (8 units of ammo if you ambush a guy, but only 2 if you got into a long running fight with him), the ability to pick up health from wall-mounted machines or get tiny boosts of ammo or intel from "informant" NPCs in the level, doors that could only be unlocked by finding remote switches, environmental hazards from spilled acid to explosive "splash damage", it just got overshadowed by Doom that did all of THAT and more....

#19, AND you could press F or C at any time to change the floor and ceiling textures respectively! Doom never had any of that level of graphic control!
