I still remember reading magazine articles about this car when it was still "upcoming"... I remember dealerships having difficulty getting them in stock... I remember one dealership in particular BOUGHT one for the dealership, simply to give test drives. It may look not too great in retrospect, but this was revolutionary for the American market at the time... it even may have been the harbinger of the crossover world we live in now... car-based, but with a high-riding position and a flat loading floor.

#1, I wouldn't go that far. There were crossovers (re: high-riding cars with hatches but not quite an SUV) before the PT became an item. Did it contribute to the retro-infection that simply won't go away for good? Yep. Was it wildly popular? As popular as seeing one with a continental wheel - yes. Was it the harbinger of the crossover? No.

#2, In retrospect, yeah, the CR-V and RAV4 got a half-decade start on it... but it was the first domestic with those attributes... and, with the xenophobia that is still prevalent in many parts of this country, it offered a gateway to the crossover market for the 'Murica people.

I am on the fence. I remember when these were new, and I even tried to convince both parents to get one. I like the pre-facelift ones, and I would definitely rock a turbo one. :) That said, I do have a love-hate relationship with Chrysler products. We had terrible luck with Chryslers in general, but they're a staple of my childhood, having grown up in a town where the only dealer to continually get new cars on time was the Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer :)
