I hear this actually happens becuase the dirt washes out from under the road? then the road eventually collapses? That really sucks. I'd be pissed if that happened to me.

That's a pretty big sinkhole. Every once in a while, one bigger than this pops up, but this is pretty darn good.

And from what I can tell, your reasoning is basically correct. Water erodes pockets of rock, etc. underground. Then, when the water-table drops, or something similar happens, the pockets become unsupported and collapse.

That is one huge sinkhole. We get a lot of those around here because of the ground composition. However, since it ie mostly granite and marble, it is chemical erosion rather than physical erosion. Makes for some interesting caves to explore though.
